WHY DOES THE HUMAN BODY RESPOND SO WELL TO CBD?
We know CBD oil is working to aid the symptoms of a number of illnesses including anxiety, fibromyalgia, epilepsy & crohns to name a few. Working well to relieve pain in the body and illnesses of the mind, it's becoming a great alternative for numerous medicines in some and could replace multiple medcines in patients with multiple ailments, for one all round treatment that affects them all. But what makes it so effective?
Well, each and every human body contains an Endocannabinoid System or ‘ECS’, which is made up of receptors. This is in fact true of all mammals, and each mammalian body produces cannabinoids; not dissimilar to those produced by the hemp plant. The hemp plant produces over 100 cannabinoids but is most commonly known for its presence of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and cannabidiol, or CBD. Simply put, the ECS is there to accept these cannabinoids throughout the body and it forms the link between our body and mind. It is responsible for such physiological processes as appetite, memory, moods & pain.
While the ECS responds to those cannabinoids created by the human body (also known as endocannabinoids) it can also be affected by plant derived cannabinoids such as CBD. A broad spectrum product will contain only CBD, whereas a full spectrum product will contain many other cannabinoids. Both will have an effect on the ECS and will react with receptors to have an effect on the relevant part of the body.
WHAT ARE RECEPTORS?
The ECS is made up of two primary receptors: CB1 & CB2. CB1 is found mainly in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 is found in white blood cells, tonsils & the spleen. While CBD has little effect on these two receptors, it is known to react with other nominal receptors extremely successfully – an example of which is the receptor GPR55 which is activated by CBD, relieving pain and inflammation. By activating certain receptors, cannabinoids allow the body to perform at its best. A better understanding of the ECS can help us to understand how CBD oils and products could help with different ailments, as well as with general health.
Further research could demonstrate far more exciting and revolutionary treatments which may soon replace invasive western medicines used to treat more violent illnesses by working with the ECS system and complimenting those cannabinoids already created by the human body. This means that CBD could eventually replace chemical pain relief drugs with a new, completely natural remedy that has no known side effects, and can help the body and the ECS compliment each other to work in harmony. Both CBD and the ECS are fairly newly discovered and constant research is being carried out to find out more, but it’s fair to say that the revolutionary realisation that our body is filled with receptors that respond brilliantly to a naturally grown plant is going to push medicine forward phenomenally in the future.
