WHAT IS ANXIETY?
Anxiety is described as a feeling of worry, fear or unease which can cause both physical and psychological symptoms, including elevated heart rate, insomnia, restlessness and irritability to name just a few. While it’s usual to experience anxiety during stressful periods or situations, General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a persistent condition that is experienced more frequently; often without an obvious cause. The symptoms caused by anxiety can interfere with everyday life, affecting day-to-day activities, jobs and even relationships. According to www.mentalhealth.org.uk, there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety reported in the UK in 2013. The numbers are rising every year, although the reason for this is unknown.
HOW IS ANXIETY TREATED?
The most common forms of treatment offered are CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), SSRI’s (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), SNRI’s (serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors), Benzodiazepines and Pregabalin.
Some prescribed medication can only be used for short periods due to it’s addictiveness, while others come with side effects and may not relieve all of the symptoms of anxiety. Medication does not agree with every patient, and taking prescribed medication for a long period involves repeated GP appointments, which can be stressful in itself.
HOW CAN CBD HELP?
The brain contains receptors which respond to various chemicals in different ways. CB1 is one of these receptors, and it’s believed that CBD works with this to release serotonin into the brain. By altering serotonin signals, the brain is better able to cope with stressful situations and therefore experience less anxiety. CBD can also reduce the symptoms associated with anxiety and is effectively treating the symptoms as well as the cause.

According to www.healthline.com, recent studies have shown positive results in cases where anxiety was treated with CBD. The studies showed improved symptoms for GAD along with other anxiety conditions such as SAD (social anxiety disorder) and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
WHICH STRAIN AND DOSE IS BEST FOR ANXIETY?
CBD comes in many forms; oils, edibles, vapes, crystals, balms and lotions - and is available in different strengths, extraction methods and spectrums.
Finding the best product will depend on the type and severity of anxiety experienced, as well as other factors including the person involved.
Oils provide long-term relief when taken daily while E-Liquids can offer instant alleviation when a panic attack begins. Everyone requires a different amount of CBD to be effective so it’s best to start on a low dose such as 5-10mg per day and gradually increase this until the desired effects are achieved.
FULL SPECTRUM OR BROAD SPECTRUM?
Broad spectrum oils will contain only CBD while full spectrum oils contain other cannabinoids, including THC. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, but is legal in quantities of less than 0.2% because it does not have a psychoactive effect in such small amounts. Full spectrum generally offers the best results because the additional cannabinoids work with the CBD and provide more benefits, however many people find relief from broad spectrum oils as well.
